Electrophysiology Laboratory

The New Jersey Heart Institute at Lourdes operates one of the busiest electrophysiology programs on the east coast. The electrophysiology service focuses on problems related to heart rhythm. The tests done in this facility help physicians determine whether a patient is prone to developing dangerous arrhythmias and also provide valuable information on how best to treat abnormalities when they are found. As electrophysiology continues to evolve to encompass new drugs and increasingly sophisticated devices, our specialists keep our program in the forefront, with a full realm of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which includes a variety of state-of-the-art devices and medications.

Pacemakers: Restoring the Heart's Rhythm

One of the most common procedures performed in the EP Lab is the implantation of a pacemaker. When the heart's natural pacemaker fails, an artificial pacemaker can be implanted. This device produces paced electrical signals that result in regular contractions of the heart and improvement of normal blood flow. If the patient develops ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation (an irregular heart action due to abnormal spread of impulses from one portion of the heart to another) a defibrillator implant can be utilized in addition to anti-arrhythmia medication.
